What an AI receptionist is.
An AI receptionist is software that answers your business phone, works out what the caller wants, and does it inside your own systems: books the table, moves the appointment, checks the repair. Infocall builds yours for you.

It answers the phone, then it finishes the call
An AI receptionist is a voice agent that handles a call the way a trained employee would. It listens, checks what needs checking, and either finishes the request or brings in a person.
"AI phone agent" is the same thing, named for what it does rather than for the job it stands in for.
Every agent is built from five layers: what customers call about, how your team handles it, what it may say, the tools it needs, and when a person steps in.
How an AI receptionist handles a call, in four steps
Four steps, and most of the value is in the third.
- 0101. It answers
- Picks up itself, day or night, with no queue and no menu.
- 0202. It works out what the caller means
- Turns ordinary speech into a specific request, including what the caller left implied.
- 0303. It uses tools
- Runs the lookups and actions it is allowed to, one at a time, waiting for each result.
- 0404. It resolves or escalates
- Finishes the request and confirms it, or says it is unsure and gets a person.
“Can you get us a table outside around seven?”
- 01Check availability 7:15pm open
- 02Check patio seating 2 outdoor tables free
- 03Create reservation Booked, patio, 7:15pm
“Done. An outdoor table for four at 7:15.”
Three names, one difference that matters
AI receptionist, AI answering service, AI phone agent, AI voice agent: the names are used interchangeably. The line that matters is whether the thing on the phone can only take a message, or can change something in your system.
The four ways AI receptionists are sold, and where Infocall sits
Voice agents are sold four ways, to four different buyers.
Infocall is the done-for-you tier: no builder to log into, no API, no contact center suite. Infocall builds and runs the agent for you. There is no platform to learn.
| Tier | Who it is for |
|---|---|
| Developer voice infrastructure | Engineering teams assembling an agent from speech, model and telephony parts. |
| Self-serve small business apps | Owners who will configure, script and maintain the agent themselves. |
| Done-for-you builds | Businesses that want a working agent and nothing new to run. |
| Enterprise contact center platforms | Large support operations with queues, seats and workforce tooling. |

Nobody was at the desk.
What separates one that works from one that does not
The voice is rarely the problem. These four things are.
Old software is a normal starting point: some systems connect directly, some need a workaround, and where one cannot be reached the agent takes the details and hands them to a person.
- Live tools in your real systems, so answers come from the system, not from a document
- Written limits on what it may promise, quote or commit to
- Tested on the calls that go wrong before it takes a real one
- After launch, Infocall keeps reviewing real calls and tuning the agent
Call one. Then decide.
Press the button and a real agent answers; the business is fictional, the agent is not. It is built the same way yours would be.
Your agent is live in ten days, built in four stages by Infocall. It starts with a free scoping call, and you leave it with the scope and the price.
Questions people actually ask.
What is the difference between an AI receptionist and an AI answering service?
An answering service takes a message, so the customer waits for a callback. An AI receptionist with tools finishes the request on the call. Infocall builds the second kind, and the full comparison is on the answering-service page.
Do I have to tell callers they are talking to an AI?
That depends on where you operate, so check the rules that apply to you. If you want a disclosure, Infocall writes it into the agent's opening, in your words.
What about call recording and consent?
Whether calls are recorded, and what callers are told about it, is decided in the build. Rules vary by place and some require every party's consent, so confirm what applies to you. Infocall does not give legal advice.
Is an AI receptionist the same as a phone menu?
No. A phone menu has the caller press buttons and routes them; an AI receptionist listens and finishes the request. The full comparison is on the phone-menu page.
Give every caller your best, every time.
The first call is free. Nothing is committed until you have a scope and a price.
